They take advantage, mostly of the elderly, usually paying around 10-15% of the actual value of the gold sent in by weight. That's if you're lucky-Much of their profit comes from people, usually elderly, who unwittingly send in genuinely valuable jewelry worth far more than its metallic weight, for which they are given only the same 10% of weight value. I highly doubt they would press any claim against the joker in the letter - cash4gold and their ilk try to stay as far away from the police and court system as they can get. They ought to spend a very long time in jail.
