There is much truth here.
I well remember endlessly cleaning my complicated and fussily-built M-16 because some 'dust' had caused it to malfunction.
- I also remember pulling an AK out of the crud and having it function perfectly.
My only quibble with the attached (which is awfully funny) is that you CAN hit a target with either of them, but the wimpy 5.56 (.223) does NOT have the penetration the 7.62 (.30) does...the latter easily turning what was cover into mere concealment.
Nothing beats .30 caliber goodness

If memory serves, the AK was designed, as most other things Russian, so the most unlettered of peasants could use it with no real training.
