It seems that President Obama’s campaign to turn ISIS into a
manageable problem is already beginning to look like a Jimmy Carter rescue
operation. Within hours of announcing his broad coalition of nine nations willing
to join us in the fight against ISIS, it turned out that some of them were only
willing to hope we had some minor success as long as they didn’t have to get
involved. Even Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who stands to benefit from the
destruction of ISIS, had demanded that the U.S. ask for permission before
conducting air strikes in Syria. Today there are reports
that the main group of “moderate” Syrian rebels have struck a non-aggression
deal with ISIS, thumbing their noses at Obama’s plan to arm and train them to
fight ISIS. Apparently he forgot to ask them if they were willing to abandon
their goal of overthrowing Assad in favor of defeating ISIS. As it turns out,
they were not.
