Good advice. I'd take it a step further, and say to get yourself a lever gun chambered for pistol ammo. Your best bet would probably be .45 Colt, an anemic fat little round that's been around since 1873. Low noise, no recoil at all in a rifle, the short size of the round gives you 10 or more shots in the same magazine space of 4 .30-30 cartridges. And of course, use "factory" appearing ammunition. What the prosecutors will never know is that a rifle's extra 12" or so of extra barrel (compared to a pistol) gives you quite a lot of extra velocity, making the old Colt about equal to a .44 Magnum in a pistol. And if you are a reloader, you can safely make up "+P+" ammo to ensure 1500fps in a short rifle, pushing a 255 grain plain soft lead flat point bullet. More than potent enough for home defense.
Rossi sells a 16" carbine you can get new for about $450.
