I have mentioned before that I grew up thinking it was normal to regularly have nuclear attack drills in school, and fallout shelter signs were a common sight in my hometown. Later while serving in the U.S. Navy aboard nuclear submarines, I participated in the infamous Cold War cat-and-mouse games with the Soviet Navy, so the collapse of the Soviet Union was an important event in my life. I am so grateful that my children have never experienced the fear of nuclear attacks that we all had to live with while growing up, and I give much of the credit for that collapse to Ronald Reagan and his “peace through strength” foreign policy....
