It's pretty common for sailors to begin their stories with "Now this is no shit..." and it's even more common for the audience to conclude that what follows is exactly that.

I had a Navy pal who was much smarter than the average bear, and he told some incredibly hilarious tales but always prefaced them with "So there we were, a few beers and a couple bad decisions later..." and the audience would invariably both laugh and give him instant credibility.

When I saw the attached at Soylent Siberia, I immediatley laughed and thought of my buddy...then I 'lifted' it so I could share it with you.
