I’m sure this has not escaped you. Israelis elect “hardliners” who end up doing their best to give away the store. Sharon, and now BB, are only two examples, Ya’alon appears to be another. The metamorphosis of these lifetime hawks is odd, don’t you think? It is usually blamed on USA “pressure,” a vague all-purpose cover story for the Israelis who betray their mandate, their people and their country. (The “impending indictment” hovering over Sharon’s head was a variation on the theme.)

 

I am an observer of the Middle East scene, and I think the “pressure” business no longer explains anything – if it ever did. There has to be something deeper or more shallow at work here.

You’re a journalist. Why not drill down and find out what incentives/disincentives really make these men and women flip. There’s a Pulitzer in it for you, and some very fascinating reading in it for me.
