First time I saw that Marine holding that umbrella I thought of a picture from long ago depicting a slave shading his master from the Sun with and umbrella.

Correct. According to my early 1960's, well worn "Guidebook for Marines" and a gigantic, roaring orders Drill Instructor, A Marine in uniform will NEVER carry an umbrella for himself or for anothers person........Nevah, Evah!
But I guess a smart dude with a law degree and who pronounces "Corpsman" as: "Corpse man" is more knowledgeable than your average grunt and given the latitude not even rendered to the Commandant Marine Corps.
