This may be Monday morning quarterbacking, but the Pentagon sounds a little ridiculous to me:
U.S. knew too little to deploy troops to Benghazi
U.S. knew too little to deploy troops to Benghazi: Pentagon
According to the Pentagon:
The Pentagon defended its decision not to deploy forces to Benghazi, Libya, as soon as the U.S. mission came under attack on September 11th, saying it would have been irresponsible to put forces in harm's way without better information.
Does this sound like a “responsible” decision to you? Imagine if your local police department responded in the same way:
Operator: 911 operator. What is your emergency?
Caller: Someone has broken into my house! Please send help!!
Operator: OK sir, stay calm. Now, how many have broken in?
Caller: I don’t know. I locked myself into the bathroom. But I can hear them ransacking though the house.
Operator: What are the names of the intruders?
Caller: Uh, I don’t know
Operator: How are they armed?
Caller: I don’t know!!
Operator: Why did they break into your house? What do they want?
Caller: HOW SHOULD I KNOW??!!!
Operator: Well I’m sorry sir. I can’t dispatch police until I have this information. It would be irresponsible……..…Click.

Al Stephenson: "The knowledge I acquired in the good ol' bank I applied to my problems in the infantry. For instance, one day in Okinawa, a Major comes up to me and he says, "Stephenson, you see that hill?" "Yes sir, I see it." "All right," he said. "You and your platoon will attack said hill and take it." So I said to the Major, "but that operation involves considerable risk. We haven't sufficient collateral." "I'm aware of that," said the Major, "but the fact remains that there's the hill and you are the guys who are going to take it." So I said to him, "I'm sorry, Major... no collateral, no hill." So we didn't take the hill and we lost the war."
