I think the Syrian Kurd takeover of their region has prompted Malaki to confront the KRG militarily.
It has been a publically stated Kurdish plan to establish autonomous zones in Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Turkey as a precurser to unifying an independent Kurdistan.
I suspect Malaki sees a need to seperate the KRG from Syrian Kurdistan to prevent that and secure the disputed zones.
Turks are also getting nervious about this and Iran cannot be happy either.
This could be the first moves in a Kurdish-Iraqi war or even larger.
Not sure either side is really ready but, events rarely wait for you to be ready...
