Desperate Despots........................by Dan Friedman

Syria's WMDs...and Iran's

It’s never easy to get the American public to focus on anything as remote and intangible as a threat to our security that originates in exotic places abroad. Even the astute and alert among us are inclined to wait until it’s too late. Impending catastrophes can always be put off another day or indefinitely, or so we tell ourselves until all hell breaks loose.

The Syrian uprising gives us a chance to shake off this complacency and see what the future holds if we don’t get out in front of it. In just the past few days, and thanks to an Israeli red flag, the Syrian supply of chemical weapons has become important news, and questions have arisen about what will happen to them and how they will be used as Assad is backed into an ever-tighter corner. Today, via Reuters we got a partial answer from the regime itself : Syria says could use chemical arms against foreign intervention

Call that what you will, but I’ll call it blackmail – and just a foreshadow of our lives if Iran is allowed to build the Bomb.

I hope I’ve got your attention by now.
