Possum drop New Year's Eve...............from Rico

Clay's Corner, Brasstown, NC (yes, he has a website at http://clayscorner.com/ which I provide in the event you find this 'hard' to believe) hosts an annual "Possum Drop" on New Year's Eve, and this year is no exception.
- It's in my mind because (a) I live about 15-minutes away, (b) a buddy of mine is one of Clay's friends and has been regaling me with stories that Clay has shared with him as they prepare for this year's event, and (c) Possums are all over the place hereabouts...I even live-trapped one on my back porch once (it was eating Louie-the-dog's food out of his dish at night; but I released it the next day, preferring squirrel and/or rabbit).

Doubters can Google Clay's Corner, the Possum Drop, Brasstown NC and you'll even turn up a Wikipedia entry.

Now, while I will not 'go' for the same reasons I avoid Times Square (New Year's Eve is what I call "amateur nite"), I have to tip my cap to this parody on NYC's event. It is the'eccentricities' like this that make the South so interesting and worthwhile.
- Besides, I often pass Clay's Corner and can stop there any time I want (he smokes wonderful meats that he sells on Fridays) and the self-proclaimed "Opossum Capitol of the World" is no stranger to me. (This is as close to an old-time country store and gas station as may yet exist in America today...a live 'museum' of sorts.)

Worth noting: Brasstown used to be known as the "Moonshine Capitol of the South" but I guess they had to come up with something a litlle bit more 'delicate' for modern sensibilities.

Happy New Year y'awl!!!

I lived in mid- North Carolina for 2-years about 10-years ago. Only reason I left was my wife missed her family. Shoulda let my wife head back to her family alone.

I went back for a visit to Western North Carolina last fall with the idea of retiring there. Dillsboro, Sylva area.

It's God's country, especially if you ain't no NYC computer geek.
