They don't, the side lettering is used for Callsigns and unit markings. In this case, the lettering is "NE*ANG" for the 'Nebraska Air National Guard'. The serial numbers are at the base of the tailfin, and appear to be (L) -842 and (R) -107.
Those p51's look like they are photoshopped onto that picture. Did Nebraska use that style of "N" in 1951? I also have a hard time believing the Nebraska Air Guard would allow their planes to be custom painted for the Huskers. I love the picture, but the planes look like they are pasted in. Also, aren't they awfully close to each other?
