Nice pic. What's the story behind it? 2 flares or something fired off from the left, observer on the beach, undercarriage doors open.

So, plane practicing ditching? Routine landing at Diego Garcia? LANTIRN training?

Cost cutting experiment by the Service testing a new way to dry the laundry and repaint the plane, at the same time?

This is a training mission flown out of Seymour Johnson AFB, NC back in the late 1970s early 80s. The B-52 was attacking a simulated target near Onslow Beach NC defended by a Marine Detachment using "Smokey SAMS". The white puffs behind the B-52 are bundles of CHAFF (aluminium foil) and the smoke stream are the simulated rockets fired by the Marines. The bomb doors are open as part of the simulated run on a target just out of sight to the right. I know this because I planned the mission while stationed at Seymour Johnson AFB and have a picture of this on my, I Love Me Wall" at home.
