Yes.
The short rule was that if you were caught up in WW-I you did not want to be in the French army. Next worse was to be trapped in the Italian army. Both of theme spent human life like it was small change and were lead by aristocrats who displayed amazing contempt for their own troops, who they treated like aliens.
It was different elsewhere. Despite the reputation for excessive brutality thrust on the British after the Somme the sense of duty and emotional bond between the officers and the men were real and they tried not to waste lives. Even the Russians were not perversely abusive.
