The Black Box is an old chestnut. Its origins are shrouded in mystery but WW2 RAF crews refered to new electronic kit as a "Box of Tricks" or a "Black Box" (as they were often in black metal casings, as were most of the radio or electrical equipment in 1940s bombers).

Post war, most airlines employed ex-bomber pilots and, when new-fangled flight data recorders were introduced the old service term for new electronic kit stuck.

And the 'Mericans call them "kiwi".

You try listening to a recipie that calls for thinly slicing two of your countrymen without cringing.
