I am planning on buying one of those compact digital cameras tomorrow. Budget £100/$150 anyone got any tips on make and model? 10-12 mp would be good.

I've had very good fortune with a Nikon Coolpix in 12 mp. It has lots of options, offering good control to the operator. Takes good action shots, low-light, sunrise/sunset/etc., 7X zoom, and still fits in a shirt pocket.
I bought myself a Samsung ES63 as an Xmas present to myself just befor last xmas cost about £80.00 goes up to 12.2 mega pixels im very pleased with it,got it from Comet.
Just had a look and they are doing a web promo of an Samsung L301 black for £84.99 or in store at £89.99
My preference would be for one of Canon's rugged, water-resistant (virtually waterproof) models that will fit nicely in outdoor garments such as life preservers, vests, Barbour jackets/coats, etc. With the ruggedization a pouch or case is unnecessary. Cams that qualify: Powershot S90, Powershot G10. My choice: Powershot D10...

Drawbacks: price.
look for a sale on Panasonic Lumix cameras. Real good value, excellent cameras.
I sure like my Canon Power Shot it is my second one and I highly recommend it.
