The device contained approximately twice as much explosive as was used by convicted “shoe bomber” Richard Reid, and “could have blown a hole in the side of his Detroit-bound aircraft,”

Don't these clips show explosions in the hold, not the passenger compartment? Not that that would make much difference with an explosion of that magnitude....
He was sitting over a fuel tank. That is why he didn't just set off the explosion in the bathroom. Where he was seated he would have brought down the airplane over Detroit.
