Story

US Army Basic Training, Fort Ord, California, January 1961. I was 17.

Had a guy in the company. Early to mid 30's. Short and dumpy. He enlisted to be a cook. He had owned a small restaurant - wife killed in an automobile accident and he was just looking for a safe place to grieve. We called him "Cookie".

Had a Corporal as cadre. Big, dumb and mean. The kind that bounced from E-4 to E-5 and back once a year. He picked on Cookie unmercifully.

Comes graduation from basic. First chance to wear the Class A's. We all get out there and wear our Marksman's Badges. Here's Cookie with a couple of Unit Citations, Purple Heart, Bronze with a V, Silver and a CIB. I will never forget the look on that Corporal's face.
