Do humanity a favor and follow the advice of Petraeus. Islamic jihadist imperialists have been trying to conquer the entire world since the creation of the barbaric islamic religion. Now that they're far too weak to do it through conventional military means they're doing it through mass immigration, terrorism and unconventional warfare. Many people have been fed a lot of inaccurate information about the history of the taliban, the history of Afghanistan, the history of al queda and our efforts in Afghanistan. One of the most widespread misconceptions is that the taliban is comprised mostly of pious muslim Afghan farmers who are simply resisting coalition occupation of Afghanistan. In reality the taliban is comprised of mostly foreign islamic jihadist extremists and their goal is to enforce strict and barbaric sharia law over the entire population of Afghanistan and Pakistan (and the whole world for that matter if they were able). Most of the taliban come from Pakistan since they were created by the Pakastani ISI (the Pakastani equivalent of the American CIA or British MI6). They often pay desperately poor locals to fight along side them but these are not dedicated "true believers" in islamic jihad and will melt away back into their normal rural farming lives when the taliban are getting smashed. Conservative estimates put the number of taliban jihadists at 20,000 at most. It's probably much less. Which would make the entire international community retreating from such a small and poorly equiped jihadist group ridiculous. This is nothing like the American-Vietnam War or the Soviet-Afghan War. The North Vietnamese communist imperialists had the full backing of the Soviet Union and the communist Chinese. They had an air force, a navy and hundreds of thousands of well equipped fighters. The Soviets invaded Afghanistan because the unpopular communist party in control of Afghanistan was under siege from the numerous rural ethnic tribes of Afghanistan. The communist party in Afghanistan begged the Soviets for help so the Soviets came and attempted to force Godless socialism on those savage ancient Afghan tribes using extremely brutal methods. This aliented and enraged almost the entire Afghan population and much of the islamist dominated region. So the Soviets were essentially trying to fight the entire nation of Afghanistan and many foreign jihadists as well (who several years into the war enjoyed American funding, equipment and training as revenge for the Soviets backing of the communist North Vietnamese during the American-Vietnam War). In contrast the large majority of Afghans HATE the foreign taliban invaders. The large majority of Afghan citizens also support foreign coalition forces in their country as a necessary evil because they need us to help them to develope and to protect them from the extremely barbaric islamist taliban (they bomb girls schools for example and throw acid in girls faces and cut peoples heads off for listening to music, etc). We also have extremeley competent military commanders in afghanistan now and much more experienced and knowledge soldiers across the board. We can absolutely defeat the taliban if we only give them the support they need back home. That includes all the equipment they need, the troops they need and strategic indepence from meddling politicians. If we lose in Afghanistan it will only embolden the islamic jihadists. Their dark and evil movement will gain more and more recruits. Not to mention the citizens of Afghanistan and Pakistan will be enslaved once again by the barbaric islamists.
