Hating America

"Every extreme attitude is an attempt to flee from oneself. The hearlessness and ruthlessness of the faculty toward anybody who dissents from their ideas convicts them. Few of them are really creative people. What makes intellectuals intolerant is that they have pretensions. They would be uncommon men, do uncommon deeds, reach uncommon heights, but they are condemned to be ordinary. So they never achieve the sense of usefulness that a man does who builds something, and they hate the system that requires them to build something in order to win recognition."
