I don't know about cranking it left-handed, but my Grandpa would have whacked anyone who grasped the crank that way. If you wrap your thumb around the crank handle you stood a really good chance of breaking your thumb if/when it backfired and whipped the crank backwards.
You always put your thumb alongside the crank handle to protect yourself from a broken thumb.
