Here's how it works:
1. Start where the men are in diagonal columns left to right as follows: 3 men, 2 men, 2 men, 3 men, and 2 men.
2. Now number **both** "halves" of each man starting at the lower left of each of the diagonal lines of men. Number both parts of each man's body on both the upper and lower sections of the image. The first diagonal column contains men 1 - 3, column 2 contains men 4 and 5, column 3 contains men 6 and 7, column 4 contains men 8 - 10, and column 5 contains men 11 and 12.
3. Note that *each* man has a portion of himself on both the upper and lower sections of the image.
4. Now transpose the left and right hand parts of the upper section of the image.
5. Notice man number one no longer has any portion of his body on the *upper* section of the image.
6. Notice man number ten no longer has any portion of his body on the *lower* section of the image.
7. Before transposing the right and left portions of the uppper section, each man had a portion of his body in both section; after transposing man 1 and man 10 are each only on *one* section, effectively spltting a single indivual in to two individuals and there by adding an addtional person to the overall count. That's the trick to the optical illusion. There are really only 12 men the whole time, but one man is made to appear in effect as two making it appear as though an addtional man has magically appeared before our eyes. Quite clever.
