Many folks were no doubt surprised to hear tha Fwance had decided to rejoin NATO, never noticing that they had withdrawn in the first place (think Charles DeGaul 1966; Cold War).
I wasn't surprised. It's been almost two decades since the Iron Curtain collapsed under the weight of Communism, and the efforts of Maggie Thatcher and Ronnie Reagan, so they might have figured it was safe to come out from under the bedcovers now.
I'm certain the Germans didn't miss them one bit, nor the British Army of the Rhine.
I KNOW I did not miss them.
Trivia question: What popular TV show describes them as "cheese eating surrender monkeys?"

Slight problem: Your pic shows members of the Legion Etrangere.
French citizens are prohibited from joining the LE. It was designed to be an expendable fighting force comprised of foreign nationals and it really has a very distinguished history as such.
I believe that photo shows a scene from Carry On, Follow That Camel! with Kenneth Williams as Commandant Maximilian Burger.
Isn't that Dennis Kucinich on the left (of course).
Also never forget the famous quote from former deputy undersecretary of Defense Jed Babbin: "Going to war without France is like going deer hunting without an accordion. You just leave a lot of useless noisy baggage behind."
