The fanwing looks great but at first sight isn't it a ultra-high aspect ratio cycloidal propeller blowing air across the top of an aerofoil? The vertical endplates on the wing appear to increase both aerodynamic and structural efficiency.
Here's a bit on cyclogyros (aircraft with cycloidal props) which hit a technological brickwall in the thirties:

No criticism of the fanwing is intended because it's at the development stage that helicopters were in the early forties.
