Langley's housboat/aircraft carrier worked better than his airplane. Which hung up on the catapult and folded up into the Potomac.
Too bad, too. His engine guy, Charles Manley, built him an engine that, had the Wright brothers had it instead of their own, would have measured their first flights in terms of miles, rather than seconds.
Langley wasn't completely sans clue, though; his earlier steam-driven models flew quite well. Didn't scale up too well, sadly.
