Opinion is the Victor was a better bomber than the Vulcan but also a better bet (3 point v. single point) for a tanker conversion (needed quickly to replace Valiant tankers). Add that to HMG's dislike of Handley-Page for refusing to merge with either HSA or BAC and the consequent refusal of the RAF to buy more Victors.
Ah misery. I so loved the Victor, always looked like something out of Dan Dare, only better. A group of enthusiasts salvaged the flight-deck of one of the RAF Manston fire training school victims, for their little museum just near there; and I managed to blag my way inside for a look. It was utterly amazing. 80's avionics mounted next to pneumatic analogue readouts; there'll never be anything like it again.
