Well, there is a US Lawnmower Racing Association. Dave Barry has written about them, I think.
We also have a lawnmower precision drill team named "The Lawn Arrangers."
Yes, it's been running in the USA for a long time. I first saw a lawnmower race in northern Louisiana in the late 1990's, and it had been going for some years even then.
