For the (especially glider) pilot, the upwind side can provide you with enormous lift; similar conditions around the Mt. Whitney area in the Sierra Nevada of California took Paul Bickle over 46,000' high in 1961.
The downwind side can have severe rotor turbulence, sometimes enough to take aircraft apart.
