Well, it's a Unimog chassis with what looks like a front loader, but why...?

It's called a Small-Emplacement Excavator (SEE). It was fielded to US Army combat engineer companies in the late 1980's to replace the previous John Deere (?) model back hoe and front loader. It's Mercedes chasssis gives it a hgher road speed so it can drive further and faster fromjob site to job site without needing to be lowboyed.

Don't JCB do a similar militarised version of their Fasttrak thingy?

What SFC Ski said. Alas, while it was quite mobile, the Engineer schoolhouse never quite caught on to the concept that speed and power in construction equipment are effectively mutually exclusive.

It's decent for light work, but don't expect to dig holes efficiently in anything more substantial than sand or loam.

Pity, it was a nice idea. But I prefer the JD410s, even though you had to haul 'em around on lowboys.
