Yep...EE is pretty ugly...but what counts is performance; just put a paper bag over its head and woweeee.
Mr Petter's aeroplane indeed possesses the understated beauty of a milk-bottle but the Phantom II really got a beating from the ugly stick. It's just a subjective, eye-of-the-beholder thing.
If you think the English Electric Lightning was ugly - and it was - be grateful that the X-32 didn't win the JSF bid:

Must be eye of the beholder... I think the EE is the sexiest of the lot.
