A family story is that my grandfather and his older brother used a punt gun to kill ducks on the Ohio River in the middle 1890s. They'd sneak out before dawn in a 20-foot john boat with the punt gun mounted on the bow, loaded mostly with pieces of scrap metal. They'd kill a bunch of ducks sitting on the water, then take them back to shore, clean them, and sell them to the hotel restaurants in Cincinnati. My grandfather and his brother (Uncle Pierce) told the story, and I never heard anyone accuse either one of lying about a single thing, ever.
