I would love to know what the other side of this of this story is.

If they are anything like the recruiters featured in 'Bowling for Columbine', the City council may have a point. The BCC were not necessarily saying that the troops / marines were uninvited guests, merely that having people prowling round shopping malls in poor areas, targeting [often black] kids with the 'We'll fund you through college / help you learn music / be part of a marching band / see the world and not mention that you might just be used as cannon fodder for the Iraq war..

Well, you catch my drift..

Be that as it may, by telling the Marines they were no longer welcome, the Berkley City Council basically told the American government to piss off. Technically, that makes them guilty of secession from the United States. Berkley receives billions in government grants for research and well, can anyone say "hypocrits"?

Disagree with the US government all you want. Americans can do that and are actually expected to do that (actually, anyone can do that as today's world scene shows). Then Americans exercise their right to vote and change things. But Berkley went too far.

As an American, I have to admit I wouldn't have any qualms about the US Armed Forces withdrawing their protection from Berkley, but then, that might be me going too far in the opposite direction.

Code Pink (the main instigators of this that I can determine) accused EVERY U.S. Marine of being a war criminal and such a generality crosses the line with a military group that has fought and died to protect American and foreign lives. It is just plain disrespectful and dishonorable.

Oh, and as for the recruiter not mentioning that you might be used as cannon fodder in Iraq, anyone who joins the MARINE corp and doesn't realize they just might be called upon to get shot at, well, I won't comment on their intelligence.

I suppose anon #1 above has no qualms about Leftists recruiting the poor, etc by telling them that Marxism actually works, and that he ignores the 100,000,000+ killed in the past century by Leftists.

I'd think anyone who really cared about the poor or minorities would be an anti-Marxist, but that seems not to be the case.

1) As a point of policy, one shouldn't take anything from Michael Moore at face value.

2) The recruiting station in question is an officer recruiting station. Now future 2LTs are by definition raw and inexperienced, however you can see part of the other side of the story by looking at BCC's website and checking out the report of the "Peace and Justice Commission"
http://www.ci.berkeley.ca.us/uploadedFiles/Clerk/2008-01-29_Item_12_Marine_Recruiting_Office_in_Berkeley.pdf

Check out their annotated agenda... Some genuine municipal business was addressed, but the BCC seems to think they are also a third Federal Legislative chamber, and part of the State Department too:
