They're only planes Theo...now some warships, sleek grey messengers of death, filled with life takers and heart breakers....!! I would go so far as to say the Type 42 Batch 3 Destroyer at 28Kts is akin to any of the Wednesday Wenches!!!
Theo, as I conveyed below no airplane can replace the Spitfire in beauty, power for its time, the right plane for the right time, ect... but lets be fair, while the paint job does not make the airplane, the mustang does look a lot more beautiful dressed in the Big Beautiful Doll paint http://preview.tinyurl.com/2soa8b and if we jump to Jets, never before or since has there been anything as beautiful or as bad ass as the F-86 Sabre IMHO http://preview.tinyurl.com/2rtvz8 .
Sorry the preview links did not work, you will have to copy and paste if you would like to view these two photos Big Beautiful Doll http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0228279/L/ and the F-86 Sabre http://www.airliners.net/open.file/1218876/L/
Then again, I always admired the P38 Lightning and the De Haviland Mosquito. Both superb machines with remarkably different performances and functions.
You're thinking on the same wavelength, mr unsworth. How about the Hunter and Buccaneer for beauty, the EE lightning for sheer milk bottle oomph and the Mystere IV, Super Mystere for Froggy je ne sais quoi. But the Grumman F-11 Tiger is probably the most curvily sexy American fighter.
There's an old Lightning parked up fairly close by. I drive past it pretty regularly. Sadly it's not exactly pristine. You do get a sense of the pilot 'being strapped on top of a skyrocket', though - what with the twin engines taking up so much of the fuselage and the canopy sort of perched on top.
Canute, Thanks for that cool link. My 4y/o nephew ( a little carrier monkey) is pretty smart for his age and will enjoy these photos, as he can name many planes and jets and even more cars than myself.

Yes but the Mustang was technically more advanced than the Spitfire. Not as elegant, true, but better performance overall.
And the P-47 beat both according to at least one that flew all of the above and a bunch of other aircraft, and he wasn't alone.
Story Here.
Spitfire was prettier though.

As one who has done the F-15E, as a guest of the USAF, I would agree that it is not as sexy to look at as a Spit. However, the sex was fantastic!

And what about the Canberra?
