Aesthetically, the Spitfire is nulli secundus. Mustang: designed to a British specification and a just a faster P-40 until fitted with a RR Merlin. And it needed the Malcolm hood for increased visibility on the B/C marks. Wasn't the blown canopy idea on the D and later marks borrowed from the Typhoon? But a technically excellent radiator installation helped extend its range. :-)
Mr. gallimaufry, You do know your WWII Warbirds and you are correct, nothing, NOTHING tops the Spitfire and never will. I was just having a bit of fun with Theo. The Bubble top, short to follow the Malcolm hood just happens to be another favorite of mine as is the 1961 Chevrolet Impala (my personal favorite car of all time) and the 1962 Chevrolet Bel air by the same nick name "Bubbletop" all very fine machines. I do however have to mention my other love, the 1970 Plymouth Barracuda with the shaker hood. Good Day Sir abinitioadinfinitum
Spitfire...Spitfire... isn't that the one with the Amal carb that killed the engine every time the pilot rolled inverted? I mean, it's nice, but it's no P-47D... just ask Bob Johnson...
In New Zealand $3250 gets you a ride in one. $2500 gets a ride in a P40 and I'll have the latter as it has closer connections to my father and is, I think, very underated. When we were up against it in 1942 & '43 it was the P40 that did the hard yards.

I'm of the opinion that the Spitfire is the most beautiful prop plane every built, but for one fault ... its legs were too short ;-)
And close together ;-)
